In 1932, the Australian government deployed soldiers armed with Lewis guns to cull a population of emus devastating farmland in Western Australia. The emus won. Major G.P.W. Meredith, commanding the operation, noted the birds could absorb enormous amounts of fire and keep moving. The campaign was abandoned. The emus remain undefeated.
