In September 1683, with Vienna besieged and close to falling to the Ottoman army, a relief force led by Polish King Jan III Sobieski arrived and launched one of history's largest cavalry charges — the Winged Hussars, feathers and all.
The charge broke the siege in a single afternoon and turned the tide of the entire campaign. Few entrances in military history have been quite so well timed, or quite so dramatic.
