In February 1861, King Mongkut of Siam wrote to the US President offering a gift of war elephants — a genuine, documented letter, intended as a gesture of goodwill using what Siam had plenty of. By the time it arrived, Lincoln was in office, and the offer was politely declined as impractical for American terrain.
