Completed in 1936, the Hoover Dam tamed the Colorado River with over 3 million cubic yards of concrete, generating power and holding back Lake Mead — one of the largest reservoirs ever created by human hands.
It was even briefly renamed "Boulder Dam" for political reasons before Congress restored the Hoover name for good in 1947. The river never got a say in any of it.
