On 6 August 1945, he was in Hiroshima on a business trip when the city was hit by the first atomic bomb. He survived, made his way home, and on 9 August — while describing what had happened to his Nagasaki supervisor — the second bomb detonated over the very city he'd just escaped to. He remains the only person ever officially recognised by the Japanese government as a survivor of both bombings. The odds on that happening to anyone, let alone twice in four days, are not odds anyone would take.
