Scotland and France didn't become allies because they liked each other's weather. They had a shared problem, and that problem was England.

Signed in 1295 and renewed for centuries afterwards, the Auld Alliance was Europe's longest-running mutual grudge pact — a treaty built almost entirely on the principle that whatever England was doing, both countries would rather it didn't work. It outlasted kings, wars, and several centuries of mild inconvenience to everyone involved.
