On 3 July 1863, General George Pickett led roughly 12,500 Confederate soldiers across three-quarters of a mile of open ground toward the Union line at Gettysburg, under artillery and rifle fire the entire way.
Pickett's Charge became the bloody climax of the battle and one of the Confederacy's worst defeats, with over half the attacking force killed, wounded, or captured. It's remembered as the moment the tide of the American Civil War turned for good.
