The Manhattan Project got its name from the US Army Corps of Engineers' Manhattan Engineer District office, not because anything was ever detonated over Manhattan itself. Somewhere along the way, the internet decided that distinction wasn't nearly funny enough.
The real test came on 16 July 1945 in the New Mexico desert — the Trinity test, the world's first nuclear detonation, three weeks before the bombs were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It changed warfare, and the world, permanently.
