On the night of 25–26 December 1776, George Washington led his troops across the ice-choked Delaware River for a surprise attack on Trenton, at one of the lowest points of the entire American Revolution. The crossing itself was nearly as dangerous as the battle that followed.
The scene became immortalised in Emanuel Leutze's 1851 painting, complete with a flag that wouldn't officially exist for another year — historical inaccuracies baked in since the 19th century, and we're not about to be the ones to fix them now.
