Some pilgrimages involve a long walk. This one involved several Turkish armies and a six-month siege.

In 1096, Pope Urban II called for an armed pilgrimage to retake Jerusalem, and tens of thousands of knights, nobles, and considerably less prepared peasants set off across Europe to answer it. Three years, several thousand miles, and one brutal siege of Antioch later, they finally took the city in 1099. Nobody's ever accused the Crusaders of half-measures.
