Soft was not the word anyone used once they actually got there.

In late 1942, Churchill pushed for an Allied strategy striking at Italy through the Mediterranean rather than risking a cross-Channel invasion straight into France. The phrase that stuck — "soft underbelly" — promised an easy route into occupied Europe. The mountains, rivers, and dug-in German defences that followed had other ideas, turning the Italian campaign into one of the war's longest, hardest slogs.

For the lads who know "easy" and "Italy 1943" never belonged in the same sentence.
