The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire ran at the same time, commanded comparable populations, and were linked, however loosely, by the same Silk Road trade routes. China knew exactly what it was dealing with. Rome, by contrast, spent most of its history treating anyone outside the Mediterranean as a footnote at best — even an empire it barely had the geography to understand.
