In 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russian envoy Eduard de Stoeckl in a single overnight session, paying $7.2 million for a territory twice the size of Texas. Critics called it "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's Icebox." Gold turned up a few decades later. Seward, somewhat understandably, never let anyone forget it.
