In 1325, soldiers from Modena raided Bologna and made off with an oak bucket from a city well. Bologna demanded it back. Modena refused. What followed was the Battle of Zappolino — one of the largest pitched battles of medieval Italy, involving tens of thousands of soldiers and nearly 2,000 dead. Bologna lost. The bucket remained in Modena. It is, reportedly, still there.
For historians who need the world to know that this happened and that it was completely real.
