In May 1940, German panzer divisions swept through Belgium and the Low Countries in days, bypassing the Maginot Line and outflanking French defences before anyone had quite worked out what was happening. The whole country was, in military terms, barely a speed bump on the way to the real objective. Belgium has been making peace with that statistic ever since.
